Rail passengers boarding 21st century trains are forced to endure 19th
century-standard toilets, Britain's stations 'tsar' told rail bosses
yesterday.

Unveiling plans for a new 'bog standard loo' for train travellers,
Chris Green said ancient, dirty and inadequate toilets that hark back
to the Victorian age of steam must be ripped out.

He urged Britain's 2,500 stations to install a standardised national
model that is clean, efficient and available to waiting passengers.

However, the bad news for rail travellers already hit with inflation-
busting rail fare rises is that they'll have to spend more than a
penny for the privilege.

Old doesn't automatically equal bad - ok, they're Edwardian (I think)
as opposed to 19th century, but the subterranean public loos in South
End Green, Hampstead (just round the corner from Hampstead Heath NLL
station) are something of a marvel - lovely tiling, wood panelling,
the works. What's more, spending a penny (or more) is free. If you're
in the area I'd actually recommend a visit, bizarre as that may sound!

London has lost some rather wonderful "facilities" over the years. I
recomend the books in "The London Nobody Knows" series. They give
some good examples.
