Many other Airport links work this way too

Much though I enjoy going there on holiday, a water taxi from Marco
Polo airport into the centre of Venice is now an eye-watering 100
pounds.

As in London, there are much cheaper (albeit slower) alternatives.

Slower than a water taxi?

The water taxis are rather fierce speedboats, afaik.

But unlike taking a cab or Underground - HEx doesn't actually take
pax. into Central London. They end up at the building site dump of
Paddington. Then they have to take a cab from there into London - at
extra cost. Or lummox heavy luggage on the Bakerloo LIne. Welcome to
rip-off Britain.

Paddington may not be the most central location, but, as others have pointed
out, there are a lot of hotels nearby. And for many destinations in London,
HEX to Paddington, then taxi is likely to be quicker than taxi all the way,
especially at busy times and the more so with the impending removal of the
M4 bus lane

Then there's Heathrow Connect too. Oh, and the Grand Union Canal, etc
etc.

HEx is designed to compete with a taxi, not the tube or any of those
others.

I didn't intend to suggest it was - but having provided (ridiculously
belated) notice of a half-price HEx ticket offer, I felt compelled to
mention the other cheaper alternatives - not quite sure why I felt the
need to do so in such detail though (at least w.r.t. the LU fares)!

Very much so. As Roland says, the water taxis are effectively speed
boats on the open lagoon. At quiet times they can reach San Marco in 15
minutes from the airport, compared with 70 minutes for the water bus.
There is a direct land bus from the airport, but it only goes to the end
of the causeway, so a transfer to water bus or water taxi is needed to
reach most parts of the city.

They keep talking about an underground railway beneath the lagoon, but I
doubt that I'll ever live to see it!
