BBC South Today this evening showed pictures of a slam door carriage being torn to pieces in the demolition yard at Immingham. The programme may probably be viewed at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/southtoday/ View todays programme. Note the programme may be seen this night only. The clip was at the end of the broadcast programme. (Not viewed this myself as it requires Real Player) Roger Why exactly are they being taken all the way to Grimsby to be demolished? Wouldn't it be more effective to do it down here? |

They were warmer and more comfortable than the new sliding door, rattling, cattle boxes that we have to travel in. |

Great Eastern into Liverpool Street. I was and still am a regular c2c passenger before and after they replaced their slam door trains with nice new sliding door ones. The sliding door ones are more comfortable, cleaner, faster, a nicer temperature and generally a more pleasant environment to travel in. If your experience of the Great Eastern is with the horrible trains they have which are like those on the North London Line then I could understand that you'd prefer the slam door ones. -- message by Robin May, but you can call me Mr Smith. [snip] I travel on c2c from time to time and agree that their new trains are VERY comfortable, maybe a little too much so. I was quite surprised at the build quality, personally - a lot of solid metal and "hard-wearing" colours compared very favourably to the flimsy plastic interiors of the Turbostars from the same manufacturer. Somehow I doubt anything containing asbestos would be shredded by a demolition crane as that coach was. Meyer Newman used to put such vehicles through a firing tunnel which inflicted such a conflagration that the main frames would sag, not sure what other scrapyards did but to get rid of asbestos is serious work. -- - Jack. http://www.tabbyvans.co.uk -- For 'purrfect' caravan holidays! |

A lot of the SR EMU's are being stored in Shoeberryness MOD site by serco. They have set up an asbestos removal building. When they are finished with it it gets takes to a scrapyard by road and then broken up. I have been to the site a couple of times regarding my groups 308 vehicle. Nick www.acemugroup.org.uk |

Down where? You're "In The North" remember. Which particular train
demolition yard in London did you have in mind? What scrapyards still scrap trains? I know of Immingham, and Simms. Is Booth Roe Rotherham still going or Glasgow MC? Mat. |

Again AFAIK, the breakers closed due to the infamous 1000+ day lack of orders for new trains and resultant lack of Mk1s being withdrawn. HTH GreenArrow |
