On Thurs 26 May only, get 90% off Advance single tickets from Southern
Railway. You can buy tickets for up to 12 weeks ahead (14 August 2011). Plus
Senior, 16-25, Friends & Family, Disabled or HM Forces Railcards can be
used!
[...]
Southern has said around 750,000 tickets are available, but they're still
likely to go fast. Be warned, the site may be slow from heavy traffic.
---/quote---

Must be purchased from the Southern website:
http://www.southernrailway.com

They did a similar promotion a couple of years ago.

Note that it's only for Advance tickets on the Southern network, which
aren't available for all journeys/routes.

Also worth noting that you may get better results for journeys to/from
London if you specify "London Victoria" as the destination/origin (rather
than the generic "London").

Plus it's worth bearing in mind the Southern Daysave and Southern Downlander
tickets:

90% ADVANCE TICKET SALE EXTENDED TO MIDNIGHT SUNDAY 29th MAY 2011

Whilst we have sold many Advance tickets at 90% discount today, due to
unprecedented levels of demand on the site, we appreciate that a few
customers will have experienced problems booking the tickets they were
after. As a result we have extended the end of the sale to midnight on
Sunday 29th May 2011, so if the site is busy then please come back and
visit it over the weekend when demand will be lower. There are 750,000
Advance tickets available at the discounted price, so there should be
plenty for everyone.

I tried a few times this morning - you have to wait several minutes
for it to come up with "An error has occurred!"

Offering a 90% discount is just one way to stress-test a website - it
may not be the most sensible.

I had wondered how insulated the Southern site was from the other WebTIS
sites (I understand they're all hosted by ATOS Origin), though a very quick
check suggests they're working fine whilst the Southern one remains on a go
slow. I don't recall this happening a couple of years ago but then I don't
think it had been trailed in the MSE mailshot either (which goes out to
millions).

BTW is it correct that some geographic locations are at a disadvantage

others saying they've got tickets while I've spent hours getting
nowhere, really angry.

It'll vary more according to who is your ISP, than where you are.

I suspect all ISP 'pipes' plug into Brighton so our ping will always
be slower than their's and they take precedence.

It's more likely to be dictated by the likely market for ISP services in the
area(s) served by the local 'exchange' i.e. the point where your 'phone line
connects to the rest of the network, since that is also the interconnection
point for your ISP. I expect the population density and demographics mean
that central Brighton & Hove gets a *lot* more hardware for broadband
services than you would find in most of the rest of Sussex.

If the OP is using Virgin Media, then it's quite unlikely any of that
applies (they do have some ADSL, but it's mainly their own network).

Similarly Sky (nee Easynet) and many others have LLU backhaul from
Worthing, which means they all have interconnects in Worthing.

I'd also be surprised if Worthing was undersubscribed in terms of BT
broadband service (compared to Brighton) as it's a "Market 3" area.

Tat's at least 10 years old, though as far as I know the DSL basics are
still correct.
