Fluffers - still employed?
 
Just seen a short clip on BBC 4 in the Dark series of archival clips
on Tuesday evening (23.55). Are 'fluffers' still employed to clean the
London Underground tracks? SB

They've got a giant yellow vacuum cleaner now :-

More stubborn debris presumably still gets human intervention but not

I thought it was about luggage porters, I remember Fluffing at Dorking,
Epsom and Clapham Jct. Bit of beer money.

presumably because what they clear up is called "fluff"

(and why do they do this? Because it's a fire risk)

Have a look at the BTF film "Under Night Streets". It is often shown on
BBC4, is on binary usenet and is also at

They may well still do the tunnels, but there's always fluff everywhere
at London Bridge in the Northern/Jubilee lines passageways.

The change from friction brakes to rheostat / regenerative has reduced
the problem.
