Five rail workers were jailed for their roles in stealing track and
other materials worth up to £1.5million.

The group took part in ‘industrial scale’ thefts from Network Rail,
diverting lorry loads of used rails to unauthorised scrapyards.

They targeted projects including an upgrade of the West Coast main
line in the Rugby area and Manchester Metrolink.

The offences first came to light when 208 tonnes of rail was found to
have been removed.

Det Sgt Chris Hearn said rail users were deprived of ‘valuable finance
that could have gone towards maintenance and improvements’.

John Burtenshaw, 53, of Stoke Hammond, Buckinghamshire, was jailed for
two years and nine months, while Terence Doherty, 48, of Warrington,
got a term of two years and six months. Stuart Amphlett, 33, of
Birmingham, Paul Tandon, 47, of Great Barr, West Midlands, received 18
months. Neil Jones, 41, of Darlaston, West Midlands, got 21 months.

Nicky Halloran, 27, of West Bromwich, and Roy Skinner, 43, of Harwich,
Essex, were given suspended terms of 12 and nine months respectively.

All defendants apart from Jones admitted conspiracy to steal.

There's the "other materials" to take into account.

Plus if it's anything like drugs then the police will take the highest
possible valuation and add a bit.

I think you mis-spelt "add a few zeroes".

Better steel than a skip load of mixed crap (no "s").

If your car is pinched it won't generally be valued in terms of what
the thieves get from the local scrappy but as what you can expect to
sell it for. If the rail was usable stock not being stored as scrap
then it would make sense to be valued at significantly more than the
scrap price.

Steel.

Depending on the grade, it can be worth as much as £200 per tonne.

Steel.

US prices for non-scrap rail would seem to be in the range of 600-800
USD per net ton :-
http://www.sterlingrail.com/classifi...pe=Rail&fsw=FS
so assuming it costs at least as much then at the current exchange
rate roughly 400-500 UKP per tonne but going back to the original
article "The offences first came to light when 208 tonnes of rail was
found to have been removed" so 208 tonnes of rail is only part of the
loot which would presumably involve more rail and an unspecified
amount of non-ferrous.

It beats me why a massive tidy up isn't launched to gather up all the old
bits of rail and other substantial metalwork that is left alongside the
tracks after a maintenance job.

There must be money in all that metal, otherwise why would the rascals take
such a pleasure in "recycling" it.

I think it may be useful to have spare rails along the route in case a rail breaks.
