So the eastern end of the central line has been shut down twice now during
the Olympics for the usual pathetic excuses. Can Blunderground go for the
hat-trick and win Olympic gold in the synchronised team incompetance?

I doubt it. I'll make you a prediction. When the Olympics are over,
TfL will insist that they did a brilliant job.

be gutted that all you've got is a couple of minor incidents that really
had zero impact on people getting to the games?

Indeed, London's public transport system seems to be coping very well,
hitting new records for passengers with few problems. The DLR, in
particular, is being stress-tested like never before.

I dare say there will be more breakdowns on the Central and Jubilee
lines before the Games are over, just as there are anyway, but the
sheer choice over routes means that few people will be stranded. Has
any previous Olympics or other large sporting event been held in a
place with so many railway lines (and even a cable car for variety)?

Zero impact? TfL were advising passengers to avoid both the Jubilee and
Central Lines and instead to go by District Line to West Ham . . . and to
walk from there to the Olympic Park! Do you know how far that is? Do you
know how many elderly people were obliged to make that expedition?
Westfield Shopping Centre was closed to non Olympic people. A new,
major shopping precinct closed! Zero impact!

The restricted access to Westfield for Friday and Saturday was planned
and announced in advance of any problems on the Central Line.

You'd think there were no other bloody shops in East London the way
people keep bringing up the "Westfield was closed" argument as some
example of armageddon.

1. The nearest other Waitrose is Canary Wharf which is a bit of a bloody
pain to get to compared with Westfield for a lot of us locals. For a
decent size M&S it's Oxford Street: no better with all that extra
traffic on the Overground.

2. My complaint was less that they closed it and more that (i) they did
so with less than 24 hours notice and (ii) then claimed it was part of
their plans all along. In other words they are either liars or
continuing the practice perciewved from TfL and LOCOG for a long time
now: tell the locals as little as possible as late as possible so they
don't have time to complain ('cos we'll ignore their complaints in any
event so we can only win).

When was Westfield closed? I was there on Sunday and two weeks ago, and
I had not noticed any closures. Indeed, I saw very little delay in even
getting across the bridge to get to either Westfield of to the Olympic park.

Plan differently and no. Of course might be frustrated by transport
problems. But TfL sprang their surprise and then claimed it was
surprise at all. If they had announced the closure of Westfield - or
even the possibility of closing it - earlier I'd not have complained.
(Interesting too that despite TfL's claims, John Lewis were unaware that
non-Olympians might be locked out of Westfield.)

So where do you suggest I should have gone to get something special for
a dinner when Westfield was denied to me? Or how would you have got to
Oxford St from Homerton?
