Is there chlorine coming out of the back of certain buses, and if not,
what's that swimming pool smell?

Sulphur dioxide, perhaps?

That's more of a rotten eggs smell, you do/ did seem to get it on
petrol vehicles fitted with catalytic converters that weren't
performing to well.
The Swimming pool smell from a diesel is more likely from one which is
using an urea based additive to lower NOx emissions. Odours are a bit
subjective but most seem to think the exhausts from such vehicles have
a taint of ammonia.
There is usually a small tank on such vehicles with the name of the
fluid to be used by the filler cap ,often proprietary such as NOx
Blue. Some diesel powered private cars require it as well but not
all dealers are good in coming forth about that at purchase time,
topping up the system is part of the service schedule and is a good
earner.

Interesting.

There have been days (just before Xmas) when the area around Oxford
Street and Soho Sqaure in London abosutley reeked of the stuff. I
assume that black cabs are similarly contributing to the stench. It
isn't any more conducive to tourism than is the NOX IMO.

Took ages to get the smell out of my nasal cavities.

That might have been those pop-up urinals.
