Which tickets Gatwick - Z1-6?

I'm a bit confused regarding ticket options. We (two adults) will arrive
monday around 11 am in Gatwick. Our first destination is Sutton, then
our room in Bethnal Green and probably a trip to the Westend. I found an
Offpeak Day Travelcard (FCC only) is 13 GBP each. Is this OK, when we
leave Gatwick with a Thameslink train, then change in Croydon?

Return on Friday will be similar: start (offpeak) in Bethnal Green, some
random trips within London zones, then Thameslink to Gatwick. May we use
the 13 GPB ticket outwards only? When and where to buy?

Thanks, Kai Borgolte, Bonn

The travelcard bit doesn't care which train company you use within the
zones. So an FCC-only limit can apply outside London only.

That'll be more complicated. I think the best option will be the same ticket
as from Gatwick, using the return half only. You'd buy it at Gatwick when
you arrive or online. I'm not certain that's valid, though. Perhaps someone
here can see a snag, or not?

Enjoy your visit.

I would agree with the above.

You should be able to buy tickets from
http://www.southernrailway.com/ for
collection from a machine at the airport station when you arrive. This is
one of the better sites because they don't charge any handling fees on top
of the ticket price.

If you want better availablility on the trip to London note that for 13.45
GBP you can buy something called a Super Offpeak Travelcoard from Three
Bridges. This is valid on all trains *except* the Gatwick Express, and gives
you a far better choice of trains between Gatwick and Croydon. There may be
evening peak restrictions on the way back if you need to leave London after
16:30 on this ticket, though.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

buy a normal Z16 One Day Travelcard
ticket on the Friday morning and then before you travel to the airport
go to a National Rail, NOT an Underground, ticket office and ask for
an extension single (one way) ticket from Boundary Zone 6 to Gatwick
Airport. This should cost £4.90 single.

OK, I will do it this way. Less fuss and not too expensive.

How are you travelling during the week? An Oyster card is the best
choice if you are going to be using any trains/tube/buses.

Then you can buy an ordinary boundary station (eg Croydon) ticket to
Gatwick for your final leg (use the Oyster to get as far as Croydon, but
you *must* leave the train and "touch out" in order to 'complete' that
last bit of Oyster travel.) Convenient, huh?

This map shows which bits of National Rail (in addition to London
tube/bus) are valid with Oyster):
