Default Raymond Chandler, car-hater

A humourous anecdote from wikipedia:

"... Interpersonal relations deteriorated rapidly until finally Chandler became openly combative; at one point, upon viewing Hitchcock struggling to exit his limousine, Chandler remarked within earshot "Look at the fat ******* trying to get out of his car!"

Raymond Chandler was a fairly good novelist, strong on character and
dialogue but weak on plot. He was also a mean-spirited alcoholic.

He had a brief spell in Hollywood and was lucky enough to work with two
major talents, Billy Wilder and Alfred Hitchcock. He didn't get on with either of
them. Billy Wilder found Chandler so unpleasant that when they were working
together on the screenplay for "Double Indemnity" he kept going into the
bathroom just to get away from Chandler for a few moments. Chandler was so
dense he really believed Wilder had a serious bladder problem!

Hitchcock and Chandler approached stories from completely different angles
and there was little meeting of minds when they worked together on
"Strangers On A Train". Chandler simply didn't understand that
Hitchcock's method, although illogical, worked extremely well. When
Hitchcock, being a very successful director and therefore in terms of movie
status more powerful than a writer, ignored Chandler's ideas, Chandler did not
accept it gracefully. That ungallant quotation - a very famous one,
incidentally - is quite in character.

A true wit, like me, would've said, "...look at THAT fat *******...."
Chandler missed his chance.
