My g/f, a non English speaker, was travelling from Chorleywood to Wendover.
I bought a return for £9.40. At Amersham se was told the ticket was only
valid as far as Amersham so she had to buy another ticket for £7.10. However
the ticket quite clearly says Chorleywood to Wendover. We have now paid
£16.50 for a £9.40 journey. Aren't the fares expensive enough without being
bullied in to buying unnecessary tickets?

I think there might be some information missing from your post.

I can't understand why a LU revenue protection officer would have any interest in taking an excess fare for a Chiltern Railways journey. Did she get off at Amersham and leave the station?

£9.40 is the Anytime fare "no restrictions", so it wouldn't matter if
she had.

It's a pity one can't report this to the police as a fraud.

Hopefully a complaint will provide a refund, although in another
overcharging scenario EMT are now 28 working days into their "hope to
provide a full response within 20 working days".

I wonder if I could get on one of their trains and tell them "I hope to
pay my fare within 20 working days"....

I can understand the "getting off at Amersham" bit - easy to get on the
first train from C'wood, which happens to be a tube finishing at Am.

But I'd agree that there's something odd about the ticket shenanigans
thereafter.

First train was a met line train. She got that then wasn't sure what to do
at Amersham. When seeking assistance she was told the ticket was only valid
to Amersham. She called me and talked to the LU person. They repeated to me
that the ticket was only valid to Amersham. When I got to work I checked on
the internet and saw that £9.40 was the correct fare. When I saw the ticket
later it was clearly marked Wendover.

I can't understand why somebody would say that a ticket clearly marked
Wendover wasn't valid to Wendover. She didn't leave the station but she had
to go through the gate that the booking clerk opened so that she could seek
assistance from the booking staff as there was nobody on the platform. He
was reluctant to talk to me on the phone but my g/f insisted as she couldn't
understand him.

I can only assume that he was blind.

I didn't think LUL permitted break of journey, hence my question about leaving the station (Amersham is an Undgerground station not National Rail). I suppose that if she had gone out through an automatic gate the system might not have permitted re-entry but that is just a wild guess. The station assistant should be able to override that anyway.

I can think of two alternatives:
1. He didn't actually look at the ticket and, not understanding your girl friend, assumed that because it worked the gates it was only valid to Amersham.
2. He has no idea how to do his job

Complain to TfL.

That ticket permits break of journey.

On the basis of your account the staff at Amersham have made a mistake
for no apparent reason and your girlfriend is owed the £7.10 full
refund.

I would think that she is owed an apology as well, if not a small
extra sum to compensate for the aggravation.
