My first thoughts we
"Who the **** is Will Self ?",

and on checking via Google, that became:
"Who the **** cares what he thinks about anything?".

Just another minor so-called celebrity - entitled to his own opinions,
but nothing else. People on uk.r probably know more about railways than
he does.

He's quite a well known author, but I'm not aware that he's ever shown any
interest in railway before. I would think just everyone here knows more
about railways than he does, so I wonder why he got a VIP tour of the
Crossrail construction site? I wonder if he's writing a book on Crossrail,
or something like that.

His Wikipedia entry says he writes about urbanity. That's an obvious
starting point, I think about town living too, but I don't give it
that name.

And what about his obsession with the penis? I might think of drilling
machines, but not in those terms! And what does his wife think of this
figure of speech?

A writer. Has had several books published. Regularly writes pieces for
various publications and also does stuff for the radio. Is usenet really
such a hotbed of philistinism? Apparently so.

Anyone who hasn't heard of Will Self is rather fortunate, I reckon. I
first heard of him in 1997 when he snorted heroin on John Major's plane
during the election campaign and then lied to his employer (The
Observer) about it. I don't usually find his pieces worth reading, and
the Crossrail one was no exception.

He seems to have a high opinion of himself. I must admit my attention
wandered quite soon.

Why is it philistinism to be unaware of the name of everybody who has
written a few books ?

It is the cult of celebrity - and, particularly, the media infatuation
with the cult of media celebrity. The real question, I suppose, is
whether Will Self does have his tongue in his cheek when he is being -
Will Self.

FWIW, I've corresponded with Self recently - and I got the impression
that he is not as self-obsessed (sorry) as he comes over. That's not to
say that he won't at some time become so - as this seems to be the
inevitable fate of those surrounded by sycophants.
