Heritage railways near London?
 

Can you recommend any heritage railways within day trip distance from
London?

I went to the Bluebell Railway last year, and it was a huge success. I
have also been on the Epping Ongar Railway.

Or anything else transport related between 8 and 19 June.

The Spa Valley Railway at Tunbridge Wells - just under an hour from London.

Something a little different is the miniature (mainly) steam Romney, Hythe
& Dymchurch Railway:

You can get there fairly easily from Ashford, about 40 mins from St
Pancras.

Isle of Wight? You could combine several things:

Isle of Wight Steam Railway
1938 tube trains operating the 'main line' service (Island Line)
Hovercraft from Portsmouth - one of the few left

You can combine them on one ticket:

There's also the Isle of Wight Bus Museum at Ryde (that I know nothing
about)

Portsmouth is 1h40 from London, then a bit of time to walk/bus to Southsea
for the Hovercraft, or the regular Wightlink ferry connects directly with
the train.

The latter is a lot more convenient, and gives you the rare opportunity to
take a London tube on a seaside pier. Even if you don't travel on the
hovercraft, you can at least view them.
