BBC Report - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-32531004

Do you think Network Rail and the TOCs are ever going to learn
lessons about trains that require external power for basic
ventilation. There seriously needs to be better contingency plans in
place for this sort of incident. Expect another lessons have been
learned type enquiry that changes nothing.

For once, we can congratulate the DfT: the electric IEPs will have one
diesel engine that can power the air-conditioning and lights if the
OHLE isn't delivering. It can also be used to move the train (slowly)
if the line is clear.

Or an alternative radical idea would be to provide windows that open.

Trouble with that idea is that passengers open them. Opening windows are
a very bad idea at 100MPH or when rushing through tunnels, as Great
Northern passengers have discovered with the class 365 EMUs.

Thats a fair point, but there's no reason not to have windows that could
be opened in an emergency either by the driver or the passengers
themselves. Remove flap - pull lever type scenario.

As some air conditioned stock indeed has. Needs a carriage key to open. And
staff of course.

In message , at 13:14:46
on Fri, 1 May 2015, remarked:

An air conditioned train with noisy open windows will soon have
people closing them.

Some close them on 365s. Others open them. It has led to arguments.

It's not an air conditioned train, so irrelevant to the point under
discussion.

Not a problem in Romania - they just keep all the windows closed at all

I had thought this was an urban legend, until on a boiling hot day recently
I made the mistake of sneezing at work and someone immediately got up and
started closing all the windows despite my protestations...

As someone who emigrated from the UK, I couldn't agree more.

Given all the smart ones ****ed off from that former socialist dump and you
went there I'd say you're out voted on which is the smarter move which doesn't
say a lot for your IQ.

You'd be amazed how smart the ones still here are - which is why of course
you UKIP lot are fighting a losing battle. Eastern Europeans aren't
stealing British jobs by moving to the UK - they're doing it over the
internet and through outsourcing; that's why there are Google, Amazon,
Electronic Arts, and all sorts of other companies doing development out
here, taking advantage of the highly skilled and highly motivated labour.
It's a delight working with graduates here compared to the lazy, entitled
lot in the UK, & I'm delighted to be doing my part to help them steal
British jobs.

Of course, if the UK leaves the EU it'll be even less attractive there and
more here. Excellent!
