(the NR system makes less sense to me than the bus system...)

It's not the fares, it's the maps...

And three cheers for spider maps, while we're at it.

Show me an Underground-style map of the NR routes and I will find it
less confusing. THAT'S why I never use it, because I can never figure
out where the hell I may end up!

AIUI ...

Such a map doesn't exist, because NR services aren't organised like tube
services; the big railway makes heavy use of its junctions to route trains
all over the place, whereas the tube mostly just has long straight lines
(despite the Northern line's best efforts). The advantage of this is that
if you can figure out which train to get, you can get where you're going
faster; the disadvantage is that you might not be able to figure out which
train to get! I think this is related to the different timetabling
approaches; the tube runs metro-style, without fixed departure times, so
people just turn up and go, which is only possible if the behaviour of the
trains is very predictable, whereas NR has real timetables, which let
passengers plan ahead more carefully, allowing more variation. Again, both
approaches have their strengths - the metro approach is more robust in the
face of delays, i think.

Now, despite all that, the new ON map
(http://www.overgroundnetwork.com/pdf/on-new-network-map.pdf) is more
like what you want, reflecting the more linear layout of the ON lines, i
think.
