Electronic tube map
 

This morning Paddington H&C station was fitted with a new electronic
tube map, consisting of a touch screen about 2 metres high and wide. One
was installed at Cannon Street two weeks ago, and they will be rolled
out to most if not all stations.

Large virtual buttons switch it between displaying the tube map (if
that's still what it's called... the tube will soon be a minority of
what it displays), the London Connections map and the walking distances
map (the one that has 2 minutes to walk from Aldgate East to
Whitechapel). The resolution isn't quite good enough to make the full
-size maps effortlessly readable, but you can pinch and zoom in on any
part of the map, as if it's a 4 square metre iPhone.

I could make a long list of criticisms, and conclude with the statement
that this is about as bad as it could possibly be while still meeting
the spec drawn up by a manager on the back of an envelope. However, the
station staff explained that this is just version 1.0 and they have big
plans to improve it: for instance you will be able to click on stations
and get a route to your destination highlighted, and it will show which
lines are shut for engineering. So I will not complain just yet...
although amusingly the map has Paddington station missed off, and has
TCR half-shut when it's actually fully open again. And Greenford not
wheelchair accessible.

I just realised what a bizarre coincidence that is, because for years
the paper maps on the Zone 1 stations usually had the station you were
at worn off by thousands of people's fingers.
