Former London Assembly Member Val Shawcross has been appointed to Mayor
Sadiq Khan’s top team as deputy mayor for transport.

First elected to the Assembly at the inaugural City Hall elections in 2000,
Mrs Shawcross represented Lambeth and Southwark for 16 years before
stepping down at this month’s election.

Prior to her time at City Hall she served on Croydon council between 1994
and 2000, going on to become its leader in 1997. Her work in local
government was recognised in 2002 when she was awarded a CBE.

During Ken Livingstone’s Mayoralty she served as chair of the capital’s
fire authority and more recently has served as chair of the Assembly’s
transport committee, a role in which she routinely tackled Transport for
London bosses on the accessibility and affordability of the capital’s
transport network.

The new mayor has also announced the appointment of Lord Andrew Adonis as
Chair of Crossrail 2 Limited, the project company set up under former mayor
Boris Johnson to further develop and deliver the capital’s next major rail
project.

Apparently not, as he'll be keeping both jobs.

As an aside, Sadiq used to work for Adonis when the latter was Labour's
Transport Secretary. Of course, I don't think Adonis has ever held elected
office, while Sadiq now has the largest-ever elected mandate in British
justify.

To me, Valerie Shawcross really stood out as an excellent London
Assembly member. I was a bit surprised when I learnt she was stepping
down from the assembly (or more accurately wasn't in the contest for
2016), but I wonder if her becoming a deputy Mayor was always the plan
if Sadiq won. I wish her well in this new role.

Genuine question: In what way was she excellent? I know little
about Val Shawcross but what I do know is not impressive.

She had demanded TfL impose insurance requirements on
minicab firms without first learning the basics of insurance. She
has demanded TfL develop a strategy for the cab trade in
London without recognising that being the regulator of a trade
or industry is not the same as running it. (Does she believe the
DVLA should stipulate what cars are sold in the U K?. Does she
believe the Gaming Commission should influence gamblers as to
which casino they frequent?)

The impression I have formed is that Val Shawcross has an
unoriginal mind and conventional Labour Party prejudices.

That's an interesting point: both the previous mayors lived in north
London, and Ken was also a north London MP. However Ken did come from
Lambeth and once represented Norwood on the GLC.
