Very little (10%) of the Newcastle Metro is underground. It's much more
of an S-Bahn than a U-Bahn.


True but the Picc-Vic tunnel in Manchester wouldn't have been much longer.
That said, it's unlikely that much of the rest of the Manchester Metrolink
network would have been built if it had been built like the Tyne & Wear
Metro which isn't suitable for street running.
