Taxi fares in Norwich
 

Norwich is not a huge city, but it's not small either. When I was there recently taxi fares were a flat £5 for every journey within the city limits. Those limits covered more or less everywhere inside the A47 diameter.

If we had a similar thing in London, with hackneys charging £7 instead of that baffling logarithmic Huskisson scale that they currently use, they might get more custom.

£7 doesn't get you very far in a London black cab (probably less than
a mile). If you say that the typical journey is, say, 3 miles, the
flat fare would be at least £15. And it would only apply within the
central area.

"Taxi" as in Hackney Carriages or Private Hire? I'm more than boggled
if it was the former as they started of with £3 for the first few yards
some years ago, when £5 wouldn't have taken you more than about a mile.
So 3 miles to the A47 is a massive cut in price.

ABC minicab at a guess, they are the firm advertising a zonal fare.

Outside the central zone they are £3.80 for first mile and £1.50 a mile
after that.

Surprisingly difficult to find the NCC Hackney rate - but a lot more than
that - have seen £3 for 300yds suggested.

They might get more custom too if they actually knew where they were
going and could read road signs.

The middle bit of Quaker Street has been closed for ages for some
building work, but there's always black cabs going too far along it,
past the last turning off, and having to turn round and go back. I saw
two within a minute this morning. Strangely none of the Ubers I've taken
recently has made this foolish error.

More likely they have it on "fastest route" setting, and it takes the
main road route even though there are traffic jams that way. The black
cabbie is trying to avoid the jams but comes unstuck, which can happen.
