How come in this modern day and age
Oysetr good idea, ...
Yet they still manage to design it so every now and again the damn thing
desn't rea correctly and you end
up going head over heals into the barrier
Or is that just me

It's just you. The rest of us have trained our feet to brake if a red
light appears.

I haven't yet, but then I've only had mine 2 days! I keep expecting it
not to work, and being incredibly surprised when it does - which, so
far, it has every time!

The only time my Oyster "hasn't worked" is when I didn't have enough
credit to get into the system... so really it works all the time.
(Incidentally it's extremely useful being able to run up a negative
balance if I'm in a hurry, and pay it off later).
