It said the White City train derailed at a set of points
undergoing routine maintenance where a 20 mile-an-hour speed
restriction was in place.

But we don't get a headline of: "Huge success: Safety Precaution works
as it was designed to".

Info on White City derailment
At 12.26pm this afternoon, the leading bogie of the 7th car of a westbound
Central line train derailed approaching White City. A London Underground
spokesperson said: "The derailment was at the relatively low speed of around
15mph.

"Around 150 passengers were taken off the train within minutes and there are
no injuries.

"As a precautionary measure, emergency services were on the scene. We are
working to restore services as quickly as possible.

"The initial investigation has focused on the track. The derailment occurred
at a set of points that were immobilised, while they were awaiting further
track work. Speed restrictions were in place. The rolling stock was not a
likely cause of the derailment."

The Central line is currently suspended North Acton to Marble Arch.

Central line services are currently running as follows:

a.. Ealing Broadway to North Acton shuttle, to link with the District line
at Ealing Broadway;

b.. West Ruislip to North Acton, a reduced service;

c.. Marble Arch to Epping and Hainault, a reduced service.
Replacement bus services are also being introduced from 1500hrs as follows:

a.. North Acton to Willesden Junction, where passengers can join the
Bakerloo line;

b.. Northolt to Rayners Lane, to link with the Piccadilly and Metropolitan
lines.
To get to stations between North Action and West Ruislip, catch the
Piccadilly or Metropolitan lines to Rayners Lane for the connecting buses to
Northolt OR catch the Bakerloo line to Willesden junction for connecting
buses to North Acton.

To get to stations between Marble Arch and North Acton, use local bus
services and alternative Tube routes. The 94 bus runs from Marble Arch,
calling at all stations to Shepherd's Bush and Goldhawk Road.

Customers travelling from Central London to Ealing Broadway are advised to
use District line services or Thames trains from Paddington.

For passengers who regularly use Hanger Lane station on the Central line, it
is only a short walk to Park Royal on the Piccadilly line.

Tube tickets will be valid on existing bus and rail routes across the
affected area. We hope to resume normal services as quickly as possible.
More information on the restoration of services will be provided as soon as
it is available

Of course we don't. In the same way a report on a pile up on the M1 doesn't
have the headline "Airbags deploy and prevent more serious injuries". The
train shouldn't have derailed and the fact that there was a speed
restriction is a negative thing because it shows that it happened despite
the knowledge that there was a fault in the area.

The only alternative (apart from fixing all the track faults overnight)
is to close the line. Surely a speed restricted line is only restricted
*because* you want the rather-more-likely-than-normal effect of tripping
the fault to be less serious. Isn't that why you drive a car slower in
fog?

According to the announcer at Canary Wharf Station, "The Jubilee Line
has a good service. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Jubilee Line has a
good service" [sounding surprised]. "The Central Line is completely
knackered. We suggest you do not go anywhere near the Central Line."
[Pause, then, hand over mike "Oh, replacement bus!"] "Ladies and
Gentlemen, there Central Line is not as knackered as I thought it was,
there is a replacement bus service between Marble Arch and North Acton".

At this point the train comes in. "The train now approaching platform 2
is the Westbound Jubilee Line services to central London and Canon's
Park. Let the customers off the train first, please. When your entrance
is clear, then you may rush on and try to grab a seat!"

At which point, most of us waiting to get on absolutely lost it! If any
of you people who work for LU know who this announcer was, do tell him
he totally made my journey.

It's amazing the difference a bit of humour can make to your journey!

There's a driver on the East London line that gives the best announcements
I've ever heard on the Underground. He's got a very deep Carribean accent,
and greets people to the train at New Cross Gate with "Good
morning/afternoon/evening Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your northbound East
London Line service to Shoreditch. The next stop will be Surrey Quays.
Passengers for the Jubilee line should change at Canada Water, passengers
for the District line should change at Whitechapel. This train will soon be
departing, so sit back, relax, cheer up and enjoy the ride, because it's a
beautiful day. And please, keep your feet off the seats, yes folks, please,
keep your feet off the seats. This train's now departing, please mind the
doors."

On the approach to a station [at a weekend] you get "Folks, this is Canada
Water. Canada Water folks. Change for the Jubilee line to central London. If
you're leaving the train here then whatever you do, wherever you go and
whatever the weather, have a great weekend. Canada Water folks."

Of course while he's saying all this there is classical music playing in the
background!

DJ.

I hope it's not Beethoven's 9th, or people will start calling the East
London Line the Clockwork Orange.

Recent announcement from attendant on a US Southwest flight, upon
arrival at terminal :

"If you're changing here to a connecting Southwest flight, the agent
at the gate will be happy to help you. If you're changing to another
airline - we don't care."

Oh - they shouldn't call it that.

That is what the Glasgow Underground (or Glasgow Subway, as I believe it is
now officially known as) is nicknamed!
