What is the minimum scheduled time to be found on LU between arriving at a
terminal point and departing in the opposite direction on the next journey.
At the opposite extreme which terminal generally affords the longest regular
turnaround time between journeys?

4 minutes is the minimum scheduled for a driver to change ends.

Do drivers still walk back at Bank W&C, like they did in BR days?
That's where the driver of a train gets out at the buffers and another
driver, waiting at the departing end of the platform, gets in and
takes the train out. Meanwhile the first driver walks along the
platform so that s/he can take the next train out as soon as it
arrives.

Don't know if they do it there or not (it's called stepping-back), but
they do it on some of the Underground lines.

As already mentioned by PP, the minimum that drivers get is 4 mins.
However, an actual train turn round time can be less than this when
stepping-back is in operation. Eg at Morden, the usual train turn round
time is 2½ minutes. Mind you, when we run the training train, we often do
turn rounds in 1-2 minutes if the signal is clear (and it's actually
changing ends, not double ending) :-)

I happened to use the W&C the other day, and at Waterloo, the driver drove
the train into the depot and walked through to the other cab before driving
the train into the departure platform.

At bank, I saw him leave the cab and walk along the platform to the other
one for the return working.

It's my understanding that during peak times, there is one driver in each
cab of the train at all times, so the trains can leave as soon as they
arrive.

Daniel.

In the peaks they have a driver waiting to take the unit straight back out,
and they do as was stated above.(Bank End) At the Waterloo end I've
sometimes seen a driver waiting for a train to shunt into the depot before
hopping in and taking it back out to Bank.

I'd guess Chesham... the journey from Chalfont is only a few minutes but
the frequency is half-hourly off-peak, so I guess the driver gets to sit
around a lot!
