Probably a marketing thing. They renamed Forton to
Lancaster, and Burton-in-Kendal to plain "Kendal",
and it caused so much confusion that they had

But the names don't really matter. You see the sign, you judge your
bladder's condition, and choose to pull in or continue. In fact, no-one ever
talks about great services, they only talk about crap services, so it is
surprising that the service operators haven't twigged that it is in their
interest not to name them at all, in order to hamper anyone trying to
discuss how crap a particular one is.

I think they should call them all Spartacus, and advertise them 1m in
advance.

No need to get your coat. Whilst like all services it charges up for a
sandwich or petrol, it is most probably the best in the country.

Indeed - unless, in the days prior to mobile phones, you're travelling
with other vehicles and want to meet up there! During the short
period that Forton was only referred to as Lancaster, we ended up with
one Scout minibus there and another at Burton, having arranged to meet
at Forton and one driver not knowing exactly where it was, and ended
up having to phone the other service station and get a PA put out for
them to explain what had happened...

fast lane.

But you can't guarantee that there will *be* somewhere nice to picnic
and spend a penny, and if you are travelling 500 miles or so in one day,
you don't really want to waste the time, if you can help it. These
places are shielded from the road by a fairly thick belt of trees, which
baffles the noise.

there's a supermarket, petrol station, cafe or whatever within a quarter
of a mile or so of the exit. How about forming a list, with basic
directions?

M1 J11 ver Dunstable Tesco about a mile along, 24hr fuel and store.
Cafe to about 6pm
