Every time I have to go to Heathrow...

....like tomorrow morning early, I rack my brain to work out the best way to
get there by public transport from Balham. What do you reckon is the
best/fastest/least schlepping-your-case-around route? Every time I chose one
way, I wish I'd gone another!

I have the same problem everytime I try to get there from Tooting and have
concluded that a taxi firm that specialises in fast routes to airports is by
far the most convenient way.

It's almost impossible to get from SW London to Heathrow on public transport
without going into Central London. If you don't want to pay for the Heathrow
Express, your best bet is probably:

Train to Victoria,
District to Barons Court
Picc. to Heathrow

Train or bus to Clapham Junction; South West Trains to Feltham; bus to
airport.

Goodness, I don't think so, except by car! By PT you go from Clapham
Junction to Feltham, and then there are at least two buses, one of them
express, that take you to the airport.

Hmm... in that case, a cab wouldn't cost that much more, and will almost
definitely be quicker if they've got a clue about the best route.

I've used Streatham's 'Airport Cars' for getting to Heathrow. About 28 quid,
and around 40 minutes d2d in the morning peak.

The TfL Journey Planner suggests several routes:

[snip]
6) Southern Railway to Clapham Junction
South West Trains to Isleworth
Bus 237 to Hounslow Bus Station
Walk to Hounslow East
Piccadilly Line to Heathrow

That's a rather silly one. If you go to Clapham Junction it's much
smarter to take SWT to Feltham and a bus (285 or 726) from there.

In fact I'm with Annabel - that's probably the best PT route overall.
Okay, making your way through Clapham Junction with luggage is probably
not that much fun, but I don't know of any route where it'd be much
easier.

You might also be able to make your way to a 726 stop closer to you, or
take Southern to East Croydon and catch the 726 from there.

Going via Paddington and HEx would probably be considerably more
painful, not to mention expensive.

I have done that route before, but I find the up-the-stairs at Balham, down
and up at Clapham Junction and the half-hour or so on the bus tortuous, to
be honest. I think I'll stick to the HX. Thanks for the pointers anyway.

I think I'll go for the HX, which is 25 of our British quids return.
Doubtless, once I'm en route to Elephant, I'll wish I hadn't!

Without luggage, that strikes me as by far the best route -
cross-platform at Stockwell and a walk at Green Park. With baggage the
Green Park bit may be annoying.

2) Northern Line to Stockwell
Victoria Line to Victoria
Circle/District Line to South Kensington
Piccadilly Line to Heathrow

Difficult change at South Kensington; gawd knows why it's suggested that
one.

3) Northern Line to Stockwell
Victoria Line to Victoria
District Line to Hammersmith
Piccadilly Line to Heathrow.

Better by far. You've got escalator-walk-stairs at Victoria to cope
with, though.

I'd go through to Embankment and change there, instead of using the
Victoria Line. It might take a few minutes more, but the change involves
a bit less distance to carry a suitcase.
