With your $10 pay-per-ride giving you $2 extra, you need to take five rides after in-system and free transfers are taken into account for it to be worthwhile. Yes, I never found it to be potential value for money, using a $10 Metrocard over 3 days instead. The cost of the Fun Pass was also disconcertingly unpredictable, with signs at JFK, guide books/inflight mags, and the actual price, differing considerably!! [A fault shared with differing statements of the fixed-cost taxi ride from JFK to Manhatten.] Fun Pass used to cost $4 (when subway rides were $1.50). It was a bit overused then, so the MTA over-reacted to plug the leak. Guide books are notoriously out of date over NYC. The easiest way of checking whether a guide book has been kept up to date is to check the Subway map in it - it's out of date if it doesn't show the orange B and D and yellow N and Q lines running across the Manhattan Bridge (from Canal St or Grand St in Manhattan to De Kalb Av or Pacific St in Brooklyn). |
