Why does the X68 exist?

As a resident of West Norwood I'm delighted that someone thinks we're
important enough to merit an express bus service. But why has this
strange relic survived? I know the 68 was split in two a while ago,
but would be fascinated to hear if anyone knows more about the
history...

For one thing it is a direct link between West Croydon and Central London
without having to change. I used to drive number 68. the X68 could be
significantly quicker especially if there were a bus or 2 missing in front
of me.

I understand that this was reviewed by London Buses and the view was
that the service was worth keeping.

If so, aren't similar services elsewhere worth introducing?

That's why my vehicle's the Piccadilly Line -
It's the size of a county and it comes every two and a half minutes

There are, I think, a few other routes with non-stop sections, e.g. the
96 between Dartford and Bluewater.

Indeed - it's hard to see why the 68 is such a special case! ISTR
there being an X43 about 10 years ago (it was called "Red Route" or
something similarly silly and I think it went all the way to Potters
Bar). Were there any others within recent memory? I suppose the 607 to
Uxbridge is a similar beast, really.

Any suggestions for new routes that should be introduced? X133 (first
stop Streatham) would seem a likely one to me, and perhaps X53 and X25
(both of which seem very busy and are long routes).

There's also the 607 (Shepherd's Bush to Uxbridge) limited-stop service
over the same route as the all-stops 207.

I notice that the X68 is pick-up only between West Croydon and West
Norwood in the mornings, and similarly between Russell Square and
Waterloo in the evening peak. Are there any other London buses with
pick-up-only or set-down-only restrictions in mid-route?

During the hours that the 607 operates, the 207 operates as two overlapping
sections, so there are some journeys for which only the 607 will do.

Surely first stop Brixton? Big massive rail / tube / bus interchange thingy.

In that area, how about an X150 or an X250? These routes are long and
very very slow.

Also X65.

There used to be an X53. Ran Oxford Circus to Plumstead, first set
down New Cross Gate, if memory serves.

I think it was scrapped in about 1999.
