Yes, as has already been explained, before the Esher by-pass was built
the road that is now the A309 heading towards Esher *was* the southbound
A3 - so in those days there was indeed direct access from the Hook
roundabout.

It was only after the A3 got "moved" (due to the opening of the Esher
bypass) that the former direct access became instead direct access to
the A309.

Now logic suggests if the Ace of Spades came first then did Tolworth
and New Malden come second and third respectively?

Yes. Further up towards London, Shannon Corner and Coombe Lane
flyover were built (I think in that order) after Tolworth and before
New Malden. Tolworth would have been around 1965, New Malden I'm 99%
sure was September 1976.

I vaguely remember that they were built at about the same time as each
other, in the mid-to-late 1970s. Certainly the journey was rendered
hideous by road-works for a long time around then.
