Cunning escalator plan?

It's a nice idea. Practically though, surely the easiest thing would be
to devise a pictorial method of indicating "stand on the right"?

I see what you're getting at, but i don't think i'd have a clue what this
means.

How about a crossbreed of this and the crosshatching: paint big yellow
chevrons, pointing in the direction of travel, on the left? The yellow
calls attention, and makes people slightly uncomfortable about standing on
it, but the chevrons have a strong sense of movement, as opposed to the
crosshatching's more 'do not enter' feel. Does that make any sense?

We've got a good few ideas now; we should write to LU and ask if we can do
a trial!
