Hi gang,

I was just looking through the upcoming Bus service changes and saw that
the 14 (Putney Heath - Tottenham Court Road) and 22 (Piccadilly Circus -
Putney Common) are due to switch to accessible double deckers from the
23rd of July.

A conductor on the 13, of my acquaintance, told me his job finished in
October...

Annabel will be pleased to hear that the 159 is going to be the last to

It's a shame that this honour goes to that route - with its ragbag of
very poorly-maintained Routemasters and extremely surly staff who seem
not to give a fig about pride in their job. Several times I have been
left standing at the bus stop at the bottom of Regent Street (with the
159 stuck behind a bendi-bus, or other queues of buses) whilst the 159
whizzes past, refusing to stop at the stop - presumably the driver
having thought that stopping half a mile further down the road was
sufficient for the "let's shaft the passengers" game.

By contrast, I have nothing but admiration for the vast majority of the
staff on routes 14 and 22. I travelled to Putney Heath yesterday (for
the first time) just to photograph the terminus there, and had a nice
chat with several conductors and drivers, who seemed to remain cheerful
despite the impending doom.

Marc.

Indeed, yes. Any time I get friends coming to visit me from abroad now,
I suggest they come down on the 159 "as it will probably be your last
chance to ride on a Routemaster".

They are appallingly bad at that on the entire length of the route, then
- I thought it was only in Brixton they played that game!

To be fair, there are still some great crews on that line, but an awful
lot of less good ones!
