Oxford Street - Buses or Trams?

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspap...867957,00.html

The Times reports proposals to rationalise the number of bus routes
running along Oxford Street down to two as part of plans to turn the
area into a boulevard. Would it be a feasible alternative to remove
buses completely and to build a tramway, offering more capacity than a
bendibus because multiple unit operation, from an interchange node at
Tottenham Court Road to one at Marble Arch, possibly as an extension of
the Cross London Tram proposals? (On a frivilous note one could
envisage illuminated trams to go with the Christmas Lights - although
they would no doubt be a pale shadow of those found in a place renowned
for its frolic and fun)

I've always thought that they should take all the bus routes out of
Oxford Street and instead run a free service with the preserved
Routemasters (or RTs, for that matter) between Marble Arch and
Tottenham Court Road.

So that everyone who shops there has to change bus at least once to get
home?

Or they can do what anyone else with more than half an ounce of common
sense does, and avoid shopping in Oxford Street (especially at this
time of year!)

:)
