I'm trying find out the best way (quickest) of getting from London

Thanks Mark

This question is not easily answered unless you tell us precisely where
in Central London you want to go.

Use the journeyplanner at www.tfl.gov.uk

If you're coming in at Terminal 4, the tube is closed and you'll need a bus
replacement to Hatton Cross or take the Heathrow Express to terminals 1,2,3
(free for that sector). If you take Heathrow Express through to
Paddington, it's very quick but also very expensive. And Paddington to
Southwark is across town. So you'd be just as well off getting the tube all
the way and save some money.

Word of warning - the tube can get very crowded as you get into Central
London, particularly in peak hours (or rush hours as the locals call them),
and it isn't easy to interchange at many stations when you have luggage.
Unfortunately you haven't said where you're going at Southwark for exact
directions, but I'd estimate just over an hour for your journey.

The fastest public transport route from Heathrow to Southwark is by
Heathrow Express train to Paddington, then by Tube (Underground). I
suggest the Bakerloo Line from Paddington to Baker Street, then a level
interchange to the Jubilee Line which will take you to Southwark. The
journey itself takes about an hour. About 10-15 minutes longer but much
cheaper is an all-Tube route using the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow.

The terminal your plane arrives at, the day of the week and time of day,
and the precise address (e.g. postcode) in Southwark could all affect
this advice. In particular, if it's a weekend, give us the date, as
engineering works could have a major effect.

Since the main hotels in Southwark aren't particularly near to the tube, he
would probably be quicker to get the Heathrow Express to Paddington, get the
Bakerloo line to Waterloo and then get a taxi for the last part of the
journey. If there are two people in his party, a taxi all the way from
Heathrow to Southwark would be approximately comparable in price and time
with the Heathrow Express route... if there are three or more people, the
taxi would be much cheaper than the Heathrow Express, although nowhere near
as cheap as going all the way by tube.

Alternativly take the 285 bus from Heathrow (Central Bus Station) to
Feltham Railway Station and catch the train to London Waterloo. Make
sure that you travel on a train that has come from Reading or Windsor,
and avoid the longer journey via Hounslow.

If travelling to the northern bit of Southwark, at Waterloo take the
Jubelee line east to London Bridge, Bermondsey or Canada Water, or the
Bakerloo line south to the Elephant.

If travelling to Peckham, Camberwell or Dulwich take a bus straight
from Waterloo.

Pay for all of this by buying a Zone 1-6 day travel card at Heathrow
Tube station.

And remember when you get there it's pronounced Suthuk, not South Wark ;-)
