Tube station has 86 steps down but only 48 steps up

Mornington Crescent tube station has warning signs at the top and
bottom of the stairs. The sign at the bottom says there are 48 steps
and the sign at the top says there are 86 steps.

Does anybody know why that is?

No.

The tube access Excel sheet I downloaded from TfL does indeed confirm 86
steps down in total.

It states 18, 16 stairs down, then 17, 15 spiral stairs, then 20 stairs.

AIUI, the lift covers the top 66 stairs.

I found the answer, from Fiddler on the Roof...

If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.

There would be one long staircase just going up,
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And one even longer coming down,
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And one more leading nowhere, just for show.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Is the bottom sign located some stairs up from the platform level?

Everyone knows that the only way to get up those 'steps' is to 'take TWO at
a time' :-)

No. The bottom sign is level with the platform. The top sign is level
with the exit.
