Does anyone know what the "emergency engineering works" were that closed the
northern line a couple of hours early on Wednesday night?

I think it was the Victoria Line that had to shut down early that night.
Earlier in the day trains were badly delayed by a track fault (broken
rail?) at Oxford Circus.
