Bus 'Code Red'

Was on a bus earlier that got stuck in a main road because there wasn't
enough room to pass another bus coming in the opposite direction. Both
buses were stuck with queues of cars in either direction.

After a few heated words (nothing offensive I hasten to add), our driver
shouted to the other 'I'm going into Code Red'. Anyone know what code
red is?

I have no idea how they got out of that problem, there was little either
bus could do to get out of it.

Maybe he walks back down the queue of cars behind him getting them each to
reverse a little to close up the gaps until there's room behind him to
reverse out of the way of the other bus.

Code RED is an emergency radio call sign

It stops all other conversation, other than the bus calling code RED and the
controller @ Baker St.

Code red is a 'priority call to centre com, usually for emergency assistance
or a situation that the driver deems to need assistance.

As other have stated - code red is a 'phrase' used by TfL buses - its
been around since they had there current radio system.

Its activated by pressing the red button on there trunked radio, this
then puts a emergency call into Backer St.

There are 'issues' with the way it is/was set-up - in so far as if more
than 1 bus at the same time, on the same registered site makes an
emergency call both come up on the same radio 'channel' and the operator
at Backer St still has to stop them talking all over each other.

Buses use code red for a lot of things, most times they want/need
assistance, or if there own controller is not answering the radio.

From a technical point;

A code red call dose not *normally* time out, it can only be cleared by
the operator, or the calling party
and the system will forcefully remove another radio call from the system
and make room for the emergency.

PSV drivers aren't allowed to reverse, apparantly. I posted on this
recently but in that instance the driver was extremely offensive but
presumabley because I was joe public and not another bus driver.
I assume in this instance they get a large crane to to lift one of the
buses out of the way or get a non psv licence holder who can reverse
the bus.

When I learnt to drive a bus (Bristol) we were given strict instructions
that reversing was OK but NEVER with passengers on board.
