Travelling beyond ticket validity using Oyster (On DLR)

I have a Zone 2-4 monthly on Oyster with £xx pre-pay.

I need to make a journey from Woodside Park (Z4) to Canary Wharf.

I intend to go via Bank and then change on to the DLR. Do I need to swipe
at the DLR entrance ?

I thought that by swiping out at Canary Wharf, the correct fare would be
deducted.
But if my Oyster is checked on the DLR train, what will it show ?

Any ideas ?

Not really, buy you definitely need to touch-in at Woodside Park as you
will begin to use PAYG after Camden Town.

It will as long as you touched-in at Woodside Park.

It will show that you touched-in at Woodside Park.

Judging from discussions here about Bank, no-one is quite sure about
when you are supposed to touch in at Bank to change to/from the DLR. The
rule *seems* to be: when using PAYG (prepay), touch in at Bank.

Therefore I'd advise you to touch in at Bank, because whilst you are in
Zone 1, you are using PAYG. In any case, touching in is the safest
option regardless of the ticket type.

I have entered the DLR at Canning Town several times, and every time it
has been behind the barriers, and every time it has Just Worked. I
don't think you need to touch in or out at Bank DLR.

Maybe you shouldn't have to, but try telling that to some of the meatheads
who check tickets on the DLR. See my story about when I got ********ed on a
DLR for not swiping at Bank (I was going from Old Street to Beckton, and
had gone through the barriers at Old Street - but this did not show on the
inspector's hand-held device on the DLR, and I got ********ed and almost
given a penalty). I was told I had to swipe at Bank as that was what they
were for, and if I did not, it wouldn't show on his device.

Oh, and I had a year season ticket for zones 1-3 at the time. No matter.

Yeah, I saw that too, but I've been gripped multiple times on DLR
journeys where I didn't explicitly enter the DLR system and none of the
grippers has ever batted an eyelid. I suspect you were the victim of a
database fart or something.

Sounds like the problem others experienced where some hand held readers did
not recognise season tickets held in slots 2 or 3. The touching-in
shouldn't come in to it if you were carrying a valid season ticket.

I suspect there is a difference between what you are encouraged to do and
what actually will work in practice. Once upon a time when they had useful
information on the Oyster website you were encouraged to touch out and then
in again when switching between different modes of transport using PAYG.
Whether they considered DLR as separate to the Underground for these
purposes wasn't totally clear. However whether there has ever been a *need*
to touch out and in is another matter.

A sort of related example is at Farringdon where you can use PAYG on both
National Rail and the Underground. According to 'Ask Oyster' (I asked...)
the correct procedure when using PAYG for both legs of the journey is to
touch out on the Underground platform and then in again on National Rail (or
vice versa). However it has been suggested on this group that in practice
you don't need to use either.

Would it be so difficult to improve the signs above the validators to
explain the situation better?

....but beware trying to get *out* at London Bridge on PAYG. I once had
an argument with the guys on the ticket gates on behalf of a friend,
when his PAYG wouldn't let him out and they said it wasn't valid. (We
touched in at the Farringdon ticket gates). In the future, I'll just
take the Tube for that journey (or rather the bus - both are quicker
than the train)...

Would it be so difficult to improve the signs above the validators to
explain the situation better?

They probably need to come up with some consistent policy first...
