Default The Crossriver Cablecar thingy

Got a lot of exposure in the press, but can't recall an awful lot about it
on UTL.

What do you guys think about it? In case you don't know, if it goes ahead
it will link the Millennium Dome (or O2 arena to give it its new title) and
Canary Wharf, and it may link to City Airport as well.

It all depends on whether this American billionaire wins the bid to build a
supercasino on the Dome site. If he does next January, then work on the
cablecar starts in 2009.

Although the main purpose will be to transport people to the casino, it can
be used for commuting as well of course, and the cost is supposedly going
to be in line with tube journeys and may even be included with a travelcard
or - as with the ferries - a discount.

Anyone have any thoughts?

It's not a new idea, of course. UTL discussed it in 1999 when this was
planned for the Millennium Dome.

But a supercasino is going to generate far more constant traffic than the
Dome, and furthermore will be open 24/7. And the government loves gambling
at the moment (did you notice that as from next year, we'll all be able to
play poker with our mates for real cash - low £10 stakes though - in any
pub?) So I can see the government putting some muscle behind this plan and
making it viable and even tying it in with the transport system. But even
if they do not, this billionaire is not strapped for cash!

So, what's the SP on UTL then?

Wouldn't a Canary Wharf -- O2 Arena link just duplicate the Jubilee
Line?

Yes, in the same way that numerous ferry journeys duplicate tube journeys.
But what a nice way to travel. :-) (as long as you don't suffer from
vertigo, natch).

Which is why I guess that a valid travelcard will provide a discount, and
not a free journey, on the future cablecar... if it goes ahead, that is.
