Oh no!

If anyone wants some inside information on upcoming City deals, or a
sprinkling of the latest rumours going round the square mile, I
suggest they plant someone with good hearing on the W&C line platform
at Waterloo from about 6am onwards each day.

Just to clarify - coverage will only extend to the W&C platforms at
Waterloo and Bank, there won't be coverage when the train is in the
tunnel - i.e. when passengers are on a train that isn't in a station.

The Tyne & Wear Metro, however, has had mobile full mobile coverage -
i.e. in stations and in tunnels - since 2004...

I already regret crossposting this to uk.railway, as much as I regret
all those days I spent bunking off school when I should have been
learning to read.

The press release, of course, makes abundantly clear that mobile phone
coverage will be made available throughout the tunnels as well as on
the platforms. I had erroneously speed read the statement and made the
presumption that mobile coverage would be limited to platforms - I
believe that London Underground had previously stated they were
investigating providing coverage on station platforms only.

I shall now go and crawl back under the rock from whence I came...

I suggest you read the article again:

"Coverage will also extend to tunnels between the two stations. This
means that passengers will be able to use their mobile phone and other
handheld devices while travelling on the Waterloo & City line."

Thanks. I've read the press release again and have concluded that it
has changed within the past hour. Either that, or I'm an idiot.

Looks like LU will pay for this test, but if there is a follow-up, it
will expect to be paid for the concession. I don't really want to deal
with more people on the phone, but on the other hand, it's not really
much of a problem in my experience on the overground bits and can be
convenient. If it results in LU getting money that it would otherwise
have to get from fares, so much the better.

Oh no!

And I thought that Moscow Metro was technologically backward! :-S
(hint: it had mobile coverage on the major stations since 1999 or so,
and almost complete coverage by 2006)

If they get DAB coverage in the tunnels, I'll put up with the extra
phone chat.
