Renting a smart car
 

I saw a rented smart car in London marked "£5 per day including 75 miles of
travel". Since this is less than I typically spend on petrol for my car in a
day, it would be cheaper to hire one of these and leave my car sitting in
the drive, and I would presumably be able to go in the Kengestion Charging
area. But I can't remember the company name. Any clues?

As you are expected to pay for the petrol that you
use from the car I don't see how this comparison is valid.

Other points:
1) the 5 pound charge is almost certainly a yield managed price
which will be unobtainable for 98% of hires.
2) it will not include insurance.
3) There will probably be an addirional charge for cleaning.

Of course you could.

But it would cost you £8.00 (unless you had managed to rent an electric
car).

the rental price.

Indeed. Under exactly the same terms as in your car - by paying the £8 or
the penalty charge if you forget (plus the hire company premium for
"handling" the fine payment for you)

for petrol, I don't see why they charge you extra for more than 75 miles per
day.

Because I thought Smart Cars were exempt, but it seems they are not.

It's becoming more and more common for hire cars to have tighter
mileage limits - for example, it allows lower prices to be posted,
winning customers via comparison sites before they spot the limit...

I've used this company and their cars a few times; they do what it
says on the tin. The price does include insurance, but only third
party cover - should you wish to insure it comprehensively that is
extra. For a fiver I think that's fair enough. There are no extra
charges for cleaning etc. The 75 miles refers to the mileage limit per
day; you are expected to pay for the petrol you use! Additional miles
attract a per-mile charge. The £5 per day price is only ever made
available on a single-day rental - renting for longer attracts a
higher price per day.

I was thinking about hiring one to pick up a potential ebay purchase in
London in the next week or so, but the car's too small to hold what I
want to buy.

I'm a member of a car club (Streetcar) which is absolutely brilliant. It
has some limitations (no good for long journeys) but in general, for short
trips, is terrific value for money.

Pay for mileage or excess mileage has been a option on car rental since
the year dot (except on very small islands where petrol may be included
too). I take it that the higher the mileage the lower the price when
they sell on their cars.
