More Shaming

They're so worried about it, put in more seats.

There's no room in those trains to "put in more seats."
The seat size and pitch is already smaller than one finds
in the US and Europe. And the trains during most hours
are already as long as the platforms, so adding more cars
to the trains is also out of the question.

Put on more trains.

There's no slack in the timetable to squeeze in more trains
at Tokyo's busiest stations. Trains are already just a few
minutes apart as it is.

If I may...

How about more lanes at the stations?

If capacity is that high, then it's justified to add another lane to
effectively double the traffic load. It just requires another extra
mile or so of track and pushing out the station a bit. (In the states,
any railwork seems impossible to get done on a budget or on time but in
Europe and maybe Japan this isn't the case.)

Well, the land use cost of doubling up the station's footprint might
be hard in Japan; they're packed pretty tight as it is.

Get rid of some people :o)

And, if the spacing between trains is already such that you cannot
run more trains on the existing track, then doubling the parking
for trains in the stations only gets you a full *and* going nowhere
train...
