To quote Jeremy Clarkson he said that "If you reduce the number of
lanes from 2 to 1 then you have to double the speed to get the same
number of cars through per hour"

Thus demonstrating that he failed O level physics.

Kinetic energy is proportional to the *square* of a car's speed.
Consequently the safe distance between cars also goes up approximately
with the square of their speed. So in fact increasing speed will reduce
throughput.

ISTR the maximum throughput is achieved at something between 15 and 20
miles/hour.

At the risk of being somewhat classist and controversial, I resent
sitting on the M25-M3 slip waiting to get on to the M3 because of the
flux of 'Ruperts' speeding down from Hampton, Twickers, Richmond etc.
in their posh vehicles, insulated from the rest of the world, secure
in the knowledge that THEY have the right of way over lesser mortals
that have to use 'The Road To Hell'.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but actually I drive a 206 from
Basingstoke to work at sunny Sunbury every day.

Perhaps you can comment on whether the new scheme has made an
improvement to your journey?
