Why do the authorities feel it necessary to seal off such a large area when

Presumably in case it was some sort of dirty/chemical/bio bomb they
want to prevent anyone getting contaminated.

Or just because a big bomb causes damage (and thus injury) quite a
long way away. When the Manchester bomb went off, I was standing
outside the Harley-Davidson garage at Deansgate station, a long way
from the bomb, but the window of said garage still deformed in a
rather scary fashion.

I did note on Friday that the police weren't going into buildings and
evacuating them in all of the Fleet Street cordon (as I ended up
inside it), they were just letting them leave their offices as normal
but not go back. This suggests a precautionary approach as you say.
There also appeared to be two cordons - I was between the inner and
outer.

Anyone know how they managed to divert traffic round Park Lane. I

There are plenty of routes to the west, for example:
West Carriage Drive (Hyde Park)
or Kensington Church Street
or Holland Road / Addison Road (A3220 West Cross Route)

The *really* important question is whether you get let off the
congestion charge when the filth divert you off the free roads.

According to the CC FAQ:

If you are diverted into the charging zone by an official diversion or
by a police officer, you do not have to pay a Congestion Charge.

You must ensure that you leave the Charging Zone as directed by the
diversion, or, if no signage is provided, at the first available
opportunity.

If you enter the Charging Zone at any other time during the same day, or
deviate from the diversion, you will need to pay the Congestion Charge.

Transport for London (TfL) will endeavour to ensure that all vehicles
subject to a diversion will not receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

In the event that a PCN is received, TfL will consider any
representation against a PCN issued in such circumstances. Full details
of the diversion should be included in the representation.

If that's really the case then they should close all of central
London. There is no particular reason that another bomb should be
within 200 yards of the Mercedes. A typical Al Quaeda plot would
involve multiple bombs, but spread over several miles.

And it turns out the second bomb WAS within 200 yards. Sitting down in
Cockspur Street, probably an area where people would have been evacuated
to had the first one gone off. Except that they'd parked it illegally and
it had been towed to just off Park Lane.

Proves my point then, once the bomb had been safed there was only further
danger in bringing out people onto the streets. Baghdad should teach them
that.
This particular cell seems to have been particularly incompetent -
surprising really for a group of doctors.

Even though it was only luck that prevented this attack I still think it is
pointless to introduce new measures merely to react to the last attack, such
as shoe inspections, water bottle checks and now airport terminal
restrictions.

If the Islamists want to kill civilians where we gather together there are
innumerable ways of doing so.

Better to keep our freedoms, stay vigilant and not give in.

Maybe the plan went wrong because they couldn't read each other's
handwriting.

This diversion exemption is rarely used. When Scrubs Lane was closed
"by an incident" (guns) recently, buses did divert off the Harrow Rd
via Ladbroke Grove and out North Pole Rd. The rest of traffic was left
to its own wits and not diverted into the Ken-zone leading to many bad
jams. Also, the record for the first such diversion from Tower Bridge
was poor: all diverted drivers were automatically ticketed and had to
fight for the supposed diversion exemption. Methinks it all sucks,
there's no official effort by the looks of it to cater for such
situations.

Compare with the system in Oslo.. NOK20 per entry = GBP2 give or take,
and local employment at the toll gates. I think I know which system I
prefer.

After Jupiter in Ophiuchus, Mars in Cetus, and the present Mercury in
Orion we have Venus in Hydra next with its apocalyptic portents for
the planet. The editorial notes as well as many special publications
are available from http://www.lulu.com/astrology

P.S.

Mars in Cetus = terrorism, Venus in Hydra = drilling the planet,
Mercury in Orion = Lady Di, ...
