I notice that one small part of this project has now happened - there
is now a new, devious, subway from the northern end of the Picc
platforms leading to the existing route to the Vic and TL platforms.
The old subway is closed off. Obviously this has been done to allow
the route from the new ticket hall to the Picc and other platforms to
be constructed but the new subway is part of the final plan.

I noticed this the other day, haven't had a look yet though. I assume the
subway joins the exsisting tunnel further down?

What's happening to the tunnel that's closed off?

I assume it is being enlarged/ extended westwards to provide the route
from Northern ticket hall to both Picc and Vic lines.

I've had another look at that diagram of the new tunnels, and it seems
the new tunnel is the n-shaped one at the far end, not the one across
the middle. It seems a bit strange to dig a completely new tunnel that
you are going to abandon in a couple of years - will it have any
purpose when the new entrance opens?

I assume it will provide the Picc - Vic interchange route, reducing
conflicting movements at the top of the new stairs (or are they
escalators) from the Picc platforms. (Most regulars will use the
shorter route regardless though.)

I went on a quick visit to the station today, and I've drawn a sketch
of where it is:

(Which diagram are you referring to? None I have show it)

The 3D diagram that used to be plastered over all the hoardings

also this one - http://www.constructionnow.co.uk/Lon...%20Tunnels.jpg

and the one at the end of this PDF -
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloa...pr07_FINAL.pdf

So, as to the new tunnel - what's it going to be used for when the
Northern ticket hall tunnels open - it seems a bit pointless with them
as well?
