It's because there's a change of modes involved. Fares for through
LU-NR (or vice versa) journeys have for a long time been more
expensive than similar journeys that just use LU or NR - it used to be
simply the price of the two separate journey legs added together. The
new zonal Train Tube Fares were introduced a couple of years back, but
these merely continued the trend (they are more expensive than straight
Tube paper tickets, which are themselves priced at 'punitive' levels).

Ouch! I thought they were supposed to have moved towards zonal fares on
NR last January?

Was there an answer to the other question, BTW? Anyone know?

Perhaps the Putney-Tolworth and Tolworth-Clapham Jcn singles could be a
Putney-Tolworth return at £4.70, saving 70p and reducing the Zones 1 &
2
saver total to £23.85. I assume a Putney-Tolworth return wouldn't be
valid to Vauxhall on the return leg, despite it also being in Zone 2?

They did, but that doesn't seem to have affected the price of Train
Tube Fares yet.

Correct. NR singles and returns within the zones are priced zonally,
but still issued as point-to-point tickets, with the same validity as
before.

I got round that problem by buying a Cambridge-Putney saver. Cost an
extra quid over a Cambridge-East Putney (actually to U12) saver but
covered Clapham Jcn-Waterloo OK. Not that SWT checked anything, other
than the gates at Putney.

through Wimbledon.

Southern, presumably going back to the days when they owned the
District's Wimbledon Line. It is ridiculous to have to go from Putney via
Clapham Junction to avid the rip-off. This will presumably go when proper
zonal fares are finally adopted.

2. SDTD SNR ODTC Hassocks-R1256 £10.55

Extra cost for a Senior Railcard Holder 65p.

That's a CDR Hassocks-Coulsdon South plus a ODTC in effect.

That's a Travelcard, though; what we were talking about applies to
singles and returns. Try comparing with a ticket to U1256 rather than
R1256.

Sorry to chime in late but you could just walk out of Putney station and
get two buses..

Take the Bus 85 towards Kingston
Change at Roehampton Vale Asda
Take the Bus 265 towards Tolworth Red Lion
Journey time 57 minutes.

Its 1.80, on Oyster PAYG avoids Clapham Junction, and indeed Wimbledon.

These buses are very frequent.

I did almost this the other day from White City to New Malden on my
Oyster PAYG and was completely amazed how fast it was - less than an
hour door to door. The bus sliced through the traffic and the A3 despite
a little backwater circle in Roehampton. It was almost as quick as
driving it myself.
