Last unpainted D Stock (last "silver" Underground train)
The last unrefurbished D Stock train is scheduled to operate on the
District Line on 21st February 2007. This will bring to an end the era of unpainted aluminium UndergrounD trains which first began in 1949 (and also on the District Line with the R49 Stock). Workings should be as train 106 ex-Upminster Depot at 16:08 and finishing at Ealing Common Depot at 00:33. The "silver" UndergrounD train was seen as the future in the late-40s, perhaps almost space age; alas brought down by the importation of New York-style graffiti crime in the 1980s. |

I'm sorry to spoil your thunder, but both the date and the duration of the event is incorrect - I should know - I will be one of the I/ops involved in the running. The final details and date are yet to be agreed. Information will be advertised when finalised. |

Actually I'm glad my info is incorrect. Let's hope the last working is
an all-day runner/early stow so that it can be seen in daylight. Be nice if the last train can be spruced up - shoebeams repainted, original all-red roundels restored. Well I can dream! |

Of course, there are some anomalies, like the 1995 and 1996 stocks, which actually entered service in the opposite order, or mark 2 batches. Maybe the dates are now more realistic -- after all, the 2009 stock started testing on the Victoria line in 2007. But I'm not sure when it will enter pax service. |

Surely the 1967 stock only entered service in 1968? A recent new idea is to pretend that the additional Jubilee stock is also 1996, including the otherwise rather different treadover plates from the originals. That's what I meant by the mark 2 comment, which also applied to the 1972 stock. The C stock also came in two widely separated batches (68 and 77). |

The main route of the District was run by a mixture of R stock (silver) and CO/CP stock (red). Audibly, the C77 doors didn't make the popping noise just before they closed that the C69 doors did. Was there a difference between EE and GEC equipment, or was it just a change of name? |

This is because there were few two-car O/P stock units formed and you needed two for a 7 car train. I don't think that's right. Short trains were definitely rare on the Upminster route, but nevertheless seen sometimes. My 1975 Brian Hardy shows 61 three-car units and 50 two-car units. That would be enough to make 25 seven-car trains plus 18 six-car trains, of which several of the latter would be on the Edgware Road line. In the last days of the CO/CP stock, I remember seeing a six-car train made up of three two-car units, but I'd never noticed any in that formation before. The District stock plan after the C69 stock cascaded the bulk of the O/P stock from the Circle and Hammersmith & City was formed in the days when District trains were 6 or 8 cars. -- Colin Rosenstiel- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - |

This will bring to an end the era of unpainted aluminium UndergrounD trains which first began in 1949 Shame! In fact the first unpainted train entered service in 1952. The original trial was of just one R49 car. I don't think that was as early as 1949 either. The R stock is another case of the years in the stock codes representing more aspiration than fact. The programme to switch all R stock trains to silver (mostly painted) wasn't completed until 1965. How long did some carry a red strip down the sides, ending in a type of whisker pattern on the ends ? I can remember as a youngster of 6 being exited when a Silver train approached as they seemed so different.I remember asking Dad why there weren't any silver buses. For the 8-car R49 train from entry into service (apart from the whisker which seems to have been an early mod) until about 1965. The R59 stock all entered service with red bands. There was a silver bus, by the way, just the one RM. -- Colin Rosenstiel |

There does not seem to be too much about it online though I found picture of a model that showed how it looked. Apparently from another link it was difficult to see in Fog so I take it was a trial for the livery. Adoption of it would have made London Streets look quite different. and would there be Red,White and Blue buses now I wonder. G.Harman Hmm. Was there significantly less fog by 1977? I suppose there may have been with various Acts. I've noticed that one of the Routemasters that they are still using for touristy reasons has been done up in the 1977 Silver Jubilee version. I wonder if the conductors are giving windy machine tickets with advertising on the back? |
