I see in this week's Railway Herald, a picture of the 'abandoned ELL
terminus platform at New Cross Gate', supposedly to be redundant once the
ELL trains run down to West Croydon (&Crystal Palace).

I thought down trains were going to carry on using the original route but as
a through platform, and the junction was going to be south of the station?

The Railway Herald is wrong and you are right - you can deduce this
from the ground without even needing to look at any plans. A new
junction has already gone in on the down slow mainline south of NXG,
this can be seen from a train obviously but also the top deck of any
bus that traverses New Cross (the road) - the existing platform will
thus be reused.

Will the tracks linking the ELL and the District (St.Mary's curve) be
removed?

I believe it's gone already.

That's the present but will it remain so when the ELL re-arrangement
is completed ?

I don't think the curve will be reinstated - I can't think of any reason why
anyone would want to use it (won't be needed for its previous use of stock
transfer; engineering arrangements for LUL and NR are separate, so
engineer's trains won't need to use it), and there are probably advantages
in keeping a good electrical gap between the 4-rail LUL lines and the future
3-rail NR (LO) lines.

The plan certainly last year was to put it back in (on the basis that
signalling etc was going to be to LUL standards and so to make it easy
to get LUL departmental vehicles etc onto the line) however I heard a
rumour that that plan was now no longer to happen.

I heard that LUL didn't want the hassle of maintaining the points,
which requires a daily inspection. I still haven't seen confirmation
of what kind of signaling the central section will have.

It seems an amazing suggestion to use signalling to LU standards on a line
that is presently being 'rebuilt to NR standards'. Are you confusing
ownership with day to day practicalities?

Has the whole thing been lifted all the way back to the district line
or just the few yards before it joins the ELL?
