Actually, they do seem to (or at least, UK motorways are demonstrably
safer than those elsewhere, which is consistent with the view that

Doubt that has much to do with the straightness or otherwise of the
motorways since AFAIK in most countries most road fatalities happen on
suburban streets. Also I can't imagine portugal being the land of
straight high speed roads though I've never been there so maybe it is.


That was a table of motorway fatalities, not road fatalities.
