Do annual Travelcards on Oyster need photocards? If so, do the grippers
ever ask to see them?

I wonder because I have one, but have never been asked for it.

I first got an annual Oyster travelcard in March 2007 and have never
had a
photocard for it (or been asked to show one).

I was only ever asked once by a bus driver to show the photocard that
goes with my outboundary (paper) monthly. I've never seen a bus
driver ask an Oyster holder for a photocard.

No, and therefore no.

Originally if you wanted a season Travelcard on Oyster you needed to
have an accompanying photocard, and have that photocard associated
with your Oyster card (i.e. have the photocard number loaded on the
Oyster card).

At some point in the not too recent past, the requirement to have a
photocard when buying a weekly Travelcard or Bus Pass was ditched, so
there was a period when you only needed a photocard associated with
your Oyster card if you were buying a monthly or longer Travelcard or
Bus Pass. Then more recently the requirement to have a photocard
associated with your Oyster card when buying season Travelcards and
Bus Passes was ditched altogether.

I guess I could try and piece together the exact timeline at some
point, but I don't know it off the top of me head.

Notionally they should inspect your paper Travelcard and check the
photocard number matches that of your photocard (in reality it's only
the expiry date that'll get a look nowadays, along with sight of the
word "Travelcard" if the ticket stock is the standard orange bordered
rail ticket). But thorough checks like this never really happened even
if the days of yore when everyone with even a weekly season ticket had
a photocard - however back then they would at least want sight of your
photocard as well as your Travelcard/ Bus Pass. Do you not even flash
them your photocard these days? During those times I've had a monthly
paper Travelcard I flashed both the Travelcard and photocard at them.

No, I use one of those 3-sided wallets folded with the ticket bit
showing, and don't bother opening it unless asked to do so, which is
almost never.
