Course they are, if you're a student. Do you mean one bought by a holder of
those YP/student railcards?

Ah, I should have been clearer. I mean a ticket bought with a student
photocard from a tube ticket office. Whatever it is I'd get if I went
to my local tube station and asked for a monthly student ticket zones 1
to 3.

No, student season tickets are LT cards not Travelcards and are not valid on
national rail (except a few joint routes).

Damn. So I take it that West Ham to Fenchurch street is not allowed?

Actually that is one of the routes you can use it on. In general they can be
used on any route that runs parallel to an Underground line. The full list is

Amersham - Marylebone
Finsbury Park - King's Cross/Moorgate
Kentish Town - Moorgate/Elephant & Castle/London Bridge
Kenton - Euston (not at Kilburn High Road or South Hampstead)
Liverpool Street - Walthamstow Central/Tottenham Hale/Seven Sisters (not at
any intermediate stations)
Richmond - Gunnersbury
Stratford - Custom House
Stratford - Liverpool Street
Upminster - Fenchurch Street/Liverpool Street
West Ruislip - South Ruislip

From 6th January 2004 I've heard that ULU has negotiated that the student
card will give a discount to national rail services in London. Basically I
suppose this means that we'll now be given a travelcard instead of the LT
Card we get at the moment.

Can't find any websites confirming this but i'm pretty sure it is correct.

London underground/DLR zone tickets didn't used to be (don't know if they
are now) valid on the National Rail sections, such as Gunnersby - Stratford
and Custom House - Woolwich.

You and I may have thought that we get LT cards at the moment, but the
third 'note to editors' disagrees; we have "travelcards from the 'Youth'
range".

That's news to me. What's your source?

I will check with my nearest friendly ULU officer in the next couple
of days, see what I can come up with.

This was announced by the mayor a short while ago, although now I
can't find it on his website!???

Hmm, yes. I've now been sent a version of the press release. At least
this time someone different's taking the credit - when the LT student
discount first came in, the NUS (who had done absolutely bugger all
towards the campaign) took all the credit.

Mind you, if the ULU President then was as unaware/seemingly
incompetent as the incumbent... Chris Piper is quoted as saying "this
is something that ULU has been campaigning for over the last two
years" -- actually, ULU has been bitching at ATOC ever since the LT
discount came in - and that was in 1998!!!
