Which service (excluding specials, Sightseeing etc.) will be the last in
London to be operated mainly by Routemasters? gordon Gordon, that fateful day can't be too far away. Writing as someone who was at Barking on 7th April 1979 when the last RT ran in service, that was a very sad day, but nothing as compared to the day of the last Routemaster. In 1979, at least we had Routemasters in replacement for RTs, but when the Routemasters go, that will be the end of a continuous line of bus development going right back to the 19th Century: rear open platforms and conductors. Sorry not to be able to answer your question, but I hope it is the 14 or 22, since they come close to my home and I can use either to get home from the City, now that, alas, the 11 has gone one-man-operated (of which, I travelled in one today: horrible, stuffy, noisy, vibrating and strange smell - and no opening front-upper deck windows, which will be Hell in Summer!). Marc. |
