The TfL journey planner offers Finsbury Park to New Barnet via WAGN
and
the 84 bus as an alternative but it doesn't look any quicker. At
times
when GN Inner Suburbans run from the Cross it might be, but how
frequent
is the 84 then?

The 84 bus runs about every 15 minutes, I think, and , although the
bus starts at the new Barnet train station, it is not synchronised
with the trains at all. There are some starting times when, as you
walk up the steps leaving the station, you see the bus leaving the
stop.

So much for integrated transport
